Cross Reacting Opiates

There are a number of legally available over-the-counter and prescription Opiates that will produce a positive result on an Opiate drug test. Opiate drug screening techniques in general (whether in the laboratory or using rapid test kits) detect Morphine, which is one of the common metabolites produced by taking either Heroin or over-the-counter / prescription Opiates.


The following Opiate-based drugs will produce a positive result on an Opiate drug test.

Codeine Dihydrocodeine Heroin Morphine Opium

There are many over-the-counter and prescription-only medicines that may contain these compounds or derivatives of them. Some of the more common medications available are listed in the table below (this list is not exhaustive):
